Shark Shootout Recap

The Shark Shootout once again provided CureSearch with a national stage to increase both awareness and funding for childhood cancer. CureSearch signs, wristbands, gold ribbons and videos were on clear display throughout the tournament as it aired on NBC Saturday and Sunday.

Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly won the Shark Shootout in exciting fashion by a stroke on Sunday. Both sporting CureSearch gold ribbons, Stricker made an eagle on the par-5 17th - hitting the second shot and the putt - to give them the lead. Kenny Perry and J.B. Holmes, who had been in the lead most of the day, both missed birdie putts on No. 18 that would have forced a playoff.

CureSearch took center stage on Thursday night, when CEO and President John Lehr spoke to the crowd of media and PGA tour professionals about the harsh reality of childhood cancer. Then Sebastian Gillen, stage IV brain cancer survivor, told his breathtaking story, illustrating the power of the research being done by the Children's Oncology Group. View the video below.

The Shark Shootout airs on NBC today, from 3pm to 6pm EST - check your local listings. The majority of the golfers will be sporting CureSearch gold ribbons on their hats, and a CureSearch 30 second Public Service Announcement will air.

During an interview with Greg Norman yesterday on NBC, he mentioned terminal childhood cancer survivor Sebastian Gillen's speech as the "best ever."

Record-Breaking Turnout at Shark Shootout 5K

This morning at 6am, runners gathered during sunrise to support pediatric cancer research by participating in the first-ever Shark Shootout 5K. With approximately 500 runners, the 5K became the largest ever first-time fundraising event in Naples history.

Many of the runners put up extremely impressive times, many of them running the entire 5K at a full sprint, averaging four and a half minute miles. There were outstanding times at every level, with ages ranging from six to sixty plus. The weather was beautiful and there were smiles all around, as runners discussed looking forward to next year's Shark Shootout 5K.

At the conclusion of the event, stage four brain cancer survivor Sebastian Gillen thanked and inspired runners with his breathtaking story. As he handed out awards, runners in each age group experienced a personal connection with childhood cancer.

CureSearch is very thankful to Greg Norman and his team for organizing such a powerful and effective fundraising effort.

Shark Shootout Family Clinic

At the conclusion of yesterdays rounds, families gathered to see an impressive display of professional golf talent as Greg Norman hosted the Family Golf Clinic presented by Suncast.

The Shark was joined by PGA tour professionals and Shark Shootout participants J.B. Holmes, Ricky Fowler and Jeff Sluman - each displaying their unique talents for the crowd. J.B. wowed the crowd by blasting drives well over 350 yards as Ricky and Jeff hit impressively accurate iron and wedge shots all over the driving range here at Tiburón Golf Club.

Lessons and a Q & A between the pros and the crowd were followed by an exciting Trick Shot exhibition. Dennis Walters, recipient of the 2008 PGA of America Distinguished Service Award, shared his amazing story with onlookers as he encouraged the children in attendance to laugh and enjoy the show, but to also learn life lessons through golf and never give up on their dreams. Dennis himself is paralyzed from the waist down and persevered to earn his living the way he always hoped - playing golf. Joined by his adorable dog and assistant Mr. Bucky, he no doubt left a lasting impression on the crowd.

Shark Shootout: The Pros Take the Field

Today began the first of three days of PGA pro competition here in Naples, FL. Early, and throughout most of the day, the team of Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly held a steady 3 to 4 stroke lead on their opponents.

The wind was certainly a factor. Predicted at 20mph early in the morning, everyone in attendance felt the strong, intermittent gusts and the golfers were no exception. Managing the elements was essential to staying under par for the day.

Late on, the powerful team of Justin Leonard and Scott Verplank took on the task of catching the leaders, which they accomplished. Two other teams came within one stroke of the lead as they rounded the back nine. It is sure to be an exciting weekend of golf; but as Greg Norman said at last night's reception, we are all truly here to support pediatric cancer research.

Last night, Chris Berman was the Master of Ceremonies at the 2009 Shark Shootout Pairings Party. While on stage, he promoted CureSearch, urging the audience to be more aware of childhood cancer and applauded tournament host Greg Norman's support.

CureSearch President and CEO John Lehr spoke with Mr. Berman afterwards, thanking him and discussing the potential for his assistance in our future endeavors. It was a great night for childhood cancer awareness.

Jeff Gordon Announces Commitment to CureSearch, Children's Oncology Group

On the 10th anniversary of The Jeff Gordon Foundation, NASCAR superstar Jeff Gordon, announced that his Foundation has awarded money to complete the funding to conduct a Phase I long- term follow-up study of pediatric cancer patients through CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation and the Children's Oncology Group. The funding was part of a larger commitment by The Jeff Gordon Foundation to support pediatric cancer treatment and research.

First MileStones Walk in DC - A Resounding Success

The CureSearch Virtual Walk for 12,500

For the second year, The CureSearch Virtual Walk for 12,500 will unite people across the country in the fight against childhood cancer. During one month, our challenge is to bring together 12,500 individuals virtually in support of the 12,500 children who are diagnosed each year. In September 2008, over $104,000 was raised to support lifesaving research.

In 2009 we are determined to join 12,500 people together to raise $12,500 in support of our mission.

For many children, this is the “Back to School Month.” Imagine walking into a new classroom after having been diagnosed with childhood cancer. Every school day, 46 children, two classrooms of students are diagnosed with cancer.

We ask for your support of the 2009 Virtual Walk for 12,500 campaign. Please consider forming a team with your friends, family members, church, school, camp, company, or community. The minimum to sponsor one child is $10. Join us by taking the hand of one of the 12,500.

CureSearch Applauds the U.S. House of Representatives Taking the First Steps to Fund Childhood Cancer Research

Bethesda, MD — CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation applauds The House of Representatives for requesting that $10M be directed to fund pediatric cancer research at the National Cancer Institute. This will provide funding for the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act that was signed into law in July 2008.

Until now, there was no allocation to fund the Act and given the tight economy, it was questionable as to whether the funding would be appropriated by Congress. As a response to this, last month CureSearch hosted an event that brought 450 children impacted by childhood cancer, survivors, their friends and families, and caregivers to Washington, D.C. to urge their congressional representatives to fund pediatric cancer research.

Reach the Day – A Great Success!

On Tuesday, June 23, 2009, the childhood cancer community, including families, patients, and friends travelled from 34 states into the heart of DC to raise their voices for all children with cancer and for those who no longer have a voice. The group of 470 registrants met at Capitol Hill for the Ninth Annual CureSearch Reach the Day event. They came to the nation’s capitol to advocate for increased federal funding for childhood cancer research and to raise public awareness for childhood cancer.

Highlights of the event included

240 visits with elected officials to shine a spotlight on childhood cancer issues to congress.
Congressman Joe Sestak (PA) launched the House Pediatric cancer caucus along with Congressman Chris Van Hollen (MD) and Congressman Mike McCaul (TX).

By the end of the day, more than 30 members of the House of Representatives joined this newly-formed caucus.

House and Senate Resolutions were introduced to designate September 12th as Childhood Cancer Awareness Day.

CureSearch would like to thank all involved for their important contributions to a pivotal day in achieving our ultimate goal – conquering childhood cancer.

Hope Street Kids joins CureSearch

To conquer childhood cancer, two leading pediatric cancer organizations, Hope Street Kids founded by former U.S. Congresswoman Deborah Pryce and Randy Walker and CureSearch [National Childhood Cancer Foundation (NCCF) and the Children’s Oncology Group (COG)] have joined forces under the umbrella of CureSearch. The announcement was made today at CureSearch’s Reach the Day event on Capitol Hill.

Important Leukemia Discovery

Working with researchers at the University of New Mexico’s Cancer Center, COG assisted in the identification of a genetic mutation that could lead to a more effective treatment of one of the most common childhood cancers, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

New Research Improves Cure Rates in Neuroblastoma Patients

Researchers from the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), the sole beneficiary of CureSearch fundraising, have demonstrated that a new experimental immunotherapy treatment using the chimeric monoclonal antibody, that targets a specific carbohydrate/lipid molecule which is present on the surface of neuroblastoma tumor cells and cytokines resulted in a 20% improvement in cure rates compared to the standard treatment used in the past.

Additional Research Funding Approved

Today’s blog is a follow-up to the previous one,when we laid out how the politics of the stimulus plan could have a big effect on future funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and its National Cancer Institute.

Today we are pleased to tell you that as of now (and things can always change in the world of politics), the NIH has been granted an additional $10 billion in funding. This is a 34 percent increase in funding in the health agency’s budget, after several years with a flat budget. We hope and expect that part of this increase will benefit the research of the Children’s Oncology Group. This increase is due in large part to the work of Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA).

Congress Considers NIH Funding Boost for Research

We wanted you to know that right now, Congress is negotiating and debating the size of an increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). We urge you to keep an eye on this important debate; it could affect medical research funding – and particularly pediatric cancer funding - in the months and years ahead.

There is no doubt that our country is in critical need of a solution to its worst economic crisis in recent history. Congress is currently debating how - and how much - to spend to stimulate our economy and start us on the road to recovery.

Part of the debate includes funds to support critically needed medical research. The debate includes two separate proposals; a bill passed by the House of Representatives, which includes $3.5 billion for NIH, and a bill approved in the Senate that could provide $10 billion for NIH. Negotiations to reconcile these two competing proposals are now underway in committee.

The increased funding for NIH would not only make lifesaving medical discoveries possible, it would provide thousands of jobs nationwide. Spread the word that you would like to see this NIH funding passed soon, to hasten the day when more children with cancer can be guaranteed the gift of a long and happy life.

Team Leaders Wrap Up Successful DC Session

CureSearch was honored to host several dozen volunteer leaders in Washington, DC on Monday and Tuesday of this week, for the annual Team Leader meetings session on Capitol Hill.

Together, several dozen advocates made an incredible 250 Hill visits. In all, they raised the issue of appropriately funding childhood cancer research to more than one-half of the entire United States Congress. This was a record number of visits, exceeding even the number achieved during Reach the Day in 2008, just before passage of the Caroline Pryce Walker Childhood Cancer Act.

CureSearch is deeply indebted to these parents – those who are bereaved and those who battled successfully – survivors, healthcare professionals, and others who commit such time and energy to appeal to our Nation’s Leadership to do more.

In Memory of Mark Bartlett

Today CureSearch mourns the loss of a great champion in the fight to conquer childhood cancer, who passed away suddenly last week. He was a humble man who had a great vision for conquering childhood cancer.

Mark Bartlett came to know about childhood cancer not through a personal experience or one within his own family, but through another family, the Keziah family of Monroe, NC.

Mark's experience of hearing the Keziah's story about losing their son Sam to a Wilms Tumor changed him forever. Through his position at Adams Outdoor advertisting, Mark arranged for a series of "Conquer Childhood Cancer" billboards to appear on interstates and along roadsides.

First one billboard appreared, then several, then many throughout the Charlotte area. All with a touching photo of young Sam Keziah, urging people to "Never Stop Looking" for a cure. Finding a cure for childhood cancer spoke to Mark's heart.

But Mark didn't stop there. His dream was to see these CureSearch billboards appear all across the country, to raise awareness and raise funds for research, to cure the the #1 cause of death by disease in America's children.

Tragically, on the very day that new billboards appeared in Chicago and Champaign, IL, Mark died in a helicopter crash near Charlotte. But his dream is being fulfilled, and his mission will be accomplished.

CureSearch Team Leader Training Set for Next Week

Next Monday and Tuesday mark the start of our 2009 Advocacy efforts for CureSearch. Team Leaders from across the country will converge in the nation’s capital for our annual Winter Training meeting.

Team leaders will learn about the status of Federal funding for childhood cancer research and will meet with Members of the new Congress, as well as key Congressional staff, to educate our nation’s leaders about childhood cancer and the urgent need for congressionally appropriated funds.

This meeting holds special importance because 2009 brings a new administration and a new Congress. Last year’s passage of the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act positions CureSearch to secure needed funds for the Children’s Oncology Group (COG).

Our team leaders will urge this new Congress to keep the promise made to children diagnosed with cancer and their families. The new administration offers CureSearch an opportunity to further raise awareness about the #1 cause of death from disease in children, and the urgent need to adequately fund the life-saving research of the COG.

Today CureSearch brings to your attention the fruits of an advocate's work, to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research, through the design of a new bracelet.

Designer Sue Pompetti has create a special bracelet called "Imagine a Cure" that is formed in shades of gold - the color for Conquering Childhood Cancer. Made of Swarovski pearls and fire polished beads, it features a pewter two-sided charm with the word "imagine" on one side and stars on the other.

Sue has created this piece in honor and memory of two special angels, Coleman Larson and Julian Avery, two little boys who Sue says "taught us all so much about faith, love, and strength."

Today we give you the story of marathoner David Gottlieb of Birmingham, AL. David will be running the Mercedes Marathon on February 15th, in honor of a 22-month-old named Elijah, the child of close family friends who is battling medulloblastoma.

David hopes to raise at least $5,000 in Elijah's name for CureSearch, to fund the life-saving pediatric cancer research of the Children's Oncology Group.

Important Finding Released: Genetic Mutations Discovered for Predicting ALL Relapse

BREAKING NEWS: Children's Oncology Group scientists have released an important research outcome that identifies specific gene mutations that can predict high rates of relapse for certain children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer.

Although researchers caution that further research is needed to determine how changes in the gene, called IKZF1 or IKAROS, lead to leukemia relapse, the findings are likely to provide the basis for future diagnostic tests to assess the risk of treatment failure. By using a molecular test to identify this genetic marker in ALL patients, physicians should be better able to assign patients to appropriate therapies.

It is always the goal of the Children's Oncology Group to not only cure more children, but to cure them better. This outcome puts COG researchers on the path to being able to better risk-stratify ALL patients, so that cure rates can improve and children will be neither over- nor under-treated at initial diagnosis.

Team Will - "Go the Distance" Documentary

Today we are excited to share a short video trailer for an upcoming documentary called "Go the Distance" from Team Will, the inspiring group of 16 bikes who rode across the county this summer, from Sacramento to D.C., to raise money and awareness about the urgent national healthcare crisis that is childhood cancer, and the need to adequately fund a cure.

All along their route, Team Will shared the stories of a children with cancer and literally wore these stories around their necks as they rode. They stopped at children's hospitals along the way, to thank caregivers and collect autographs of "their heroes," the brave children who are fighting this disease.

Team Will rode triumphantly into Washington to join with all who had gathered at Reach the Day, CureSearch's annual advocacy event. While in the Nation's Capitol, they joined with many hundreds of physicians, nurses, social workers, parents and others, to urge Congress to pass the Conquer Childhood Cancer Act. Of course, this is exactly what happened!

Team Will has already announced their route for 2010 for this biennial event - San Francisco, CA to Kitty Hawk, NC. There will be much more to share about Team Will in the coming months, but for now, enjoy this wonderful taste of the documentary that is soon to come!

Great News from "The Unlikely Lavendar Queen"

A few weeks ago, we blogged that Pultizer-prize nominated author Jeannie Ralston would be donating a portion of December sales of her new book "The Unlikely Lavendar Queen" to CureSearch through her philanthropy program called "The Seed Campaign," in honor of her brave nephew Jacob Ralston, a childhood cancer survivor.

Then in a follow-up blog, we had informed you of a concern that Jacob's cancer had possibly returned.

Today, we are happy to tell you the great news: Jacob has not relapsed!

We celebrate today with the Ralstons...and wanted to share a portion of Jeannie's message from her website.

Greetings!
Isn't it nice to start off the year with good news, especially when there's so much gloomy news around? Not only did we raise a nice amount for CureSearch in December but my beautiful nephew Jacob is doing much better in his struggle with cancer.

Thanks for the Prayers
I reported at one point that Jacob's MRI scan showed a dark mark on the place on his spine where there was a tumor last year. The worry was that the tumor had come back.
After much anxiety and a biopsy, doctors found that the bone mass on his spine was NOT cancerous. We're wildly relieved, as you can imagine. Prayers certainly do work. Thank you so much. The picture above is of my family and Jacob's family last year during his cancer treatment.

I'm happy to report that December's Seed Campaign efforts have raised, $1,034 for CureSearach, the wonderful organization that is looking for a cure for childhood cancer.

Notes Left Behind - The Elena Desserich Story

We wanted to share a touching story of five-year old Elena Desserich of Wyoming, who was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. During her final months, she penned hundreds of drawings, paintings and notes of encouragement to her sister Grace and to her mom and dad, to help them cope with her pending death. Before her death in August, 2007, she even wrote "The Kindergarten Survival Guide" to help Grace when got old enough to go to school.

She lived an amazing life of accomplishment, including having one of her paintings entitled "I Love You" hang in the Cincinnati Art Museum, next to a work by Pablo Pacasso. Her story was recently featured on ABC's "Good Morning America."

After Elena passed away, her parents Brooke and Keith began to find more notes in the cracks and crevices of their home that she had hidden for them, reminders to them of her love. Her parents have put some of these together in a book entitled Notes Left Behind.

NCI Report on Pediatric Cancer Released

National Cancer Institute has just released a snapshot of pediatric cancers that we wanted to share with you. In it, you can find data regarding childhood cancer incidences and mortality since 1985, as well as a list of selected advances in research, most of which stem from the Children’s Oncology Group.

Also, we wanted to share with you a touching story in CNN about what it’s like when parents have to tell a child that they have cancer. Experts agree that, no matter what the reality is, it is always best to be straightforward with a child when discussing this diagnosis.

The team of Kenny Perry and Scott Hoch never let up on Sunday, scoring another 12-under par round of 60 to maintain their lead and capture the 20th Anniversary Merrill Lynch Shootout to benefit CureSearch, by four strokes over J.B. Holmes and Boo Weekley.

CureSearch extends special thanks to Honorary Board of Trustee Greg Norman for another fantastic tournament, to the 24 PGA TOUR pros who provided a lifetime's worth of highlights, to NBC Sports and Golf Channel for their excellent coverage, and to the staff and volunteers at the Tiburon Golf Club at the Ritz-Carlton Resort in Naples, FL. It was truly a world-class event!
And speaking of world-class, who will ever forget seeing golf legends Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Raymond Floyd reunite with The Shark, to reminisce about the growth of the Shootout over its 20-year history, and discuss their commitment to charity and to conquering childhood cancer.

Day 2 of the 20th Anniversary Merrill Lynch Shootout is in the books. The team of Scott Hoch and Kerry Perry blazed a 12-under par round of 60 to take a four-shot lead heading into this afternoon's final round. You can see round three news and notes here.

The Sunscast Family Golf Clinic on Friday was once again a huge hit with fans, as children from throughout Southwest Florida were treated to tips and advice from PGA TOUR pros Jeff Sluman, Scott McCarron and tournament host Greg Norman.

In a rare and remarkable joint appearance, three golf legends joined with fellow World Golf Hall of Famer (and CureSearch Honorary Trustee) Greg Norman last night to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Merrill Lynch Shootout PGA TOUR tournament, in support of CureSearch

Norman invited back Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd who together made up the original field of what began as a fundraiser for what is now the Arnold Parmer Medical center in Orlando, to reminisce about how far the event has come. The Merrill Lynch Shootout has evolved into a three-day, 24-man event and an internationally televised broadcast. And Norman is humbled and invigorated by that reality.

"We truly love our sport with a passion, but more than that, I think we all love giving back," Norman said.

Rayond Floyd added that "I think the real significance is the reflection of the charities and the sport, what golf has meant to so many."

Tune in to Golf Channel today from 3-6 pm, and again from 9 pm - midnight (EDT), and watch continuing coverage all weekend on NBC Sports (Saturday 4 - 6 pm, Sundeay 3 - 6 pm). Merrill Lynch Shootout Update: the Pro-Am competition begins tomorrow, and will include ESPN's Chris Berman for the fifth consecutive year. We thank Chris for again supporting Greg Norman, CureSearch and the Children's Oncology Group in the fight to conquer childhood cancer.

All week, remember to check back to the CureSearch blog and the Merrill Lynch Shootout offical site for event photos, pairings and tee times, and PGA TOUR scoring updates starting Friday, when the team event begins.

Merrill Lynch Shootout Week is Here!

This is one of the biggest weeks of the year for CureSearch to raise awareness and visibility in our fight to conquer childhood cancer.

The PGA TOUR visits Naples, FL this week, and World Golf Hall of Famer and Honorary Board of Trustee Greg Norman gives us an international spotlight, as he plays host to two dozen of the world’s greatest golfers at the 20th Anniversary Merrill Lynch Shootout, televised on Golf Channel and NBC Sports.

In a newspaper interview today, The Shark reflects back on origins of this great PGA TOUR event, noting that "Each year this tournament has seemed to grow in stature. Twenty years ago we started with four players and now look at us. The format has stood the test of time….the atmosphere is still the same. People still enjoy it. The end result is we still give out a heck of an amount of money to charity."

We have blogged before about the Merrill Lynch Shootout, and Greg Norman’s commitment to support the life-saving research of the Children’s Oncology Group and reach the day when every child with cancer is guaranteed a cure.

The words The Shark spoke at last year’s Merrill Lynch Shootout Awards Gala bear repeating as the tournament nears:

“It’s great for us to gather here, and exciting to have a great week of golf, but remember why we are here – to bring us closer to the day when childhood cancer is no more.”

The Gift of Hope

Today, we call to your attention two items.

The first is a terrific newspaper article that appeared in the Willoughby (OH) News-Herald, a popular paper from just outside of Cleveland.
In it, Anthony and Diana Fimiani recount the heartbreaking loss of their two-year old daughter, Hope, to leukemia. Hope endured much in her short life, including being born with Down’s syndrome and having surgery to repair a hole in her heart. Right up until Hope passed away in October, Anthony and Diana said, she was a smiling, happy child, and the apple of her parents’ eyes.

"It's the hardest thing you can possibly go through as a parent," Anthony adds.

Also in this story, you can learn about the story of CureSearch and the Children’s Oncology Group, through the testimony of CureSearch Ohio State Team Leader, Betsy Hammond. Read about the relentless medical progress being made every day to bring about a world where children with cancer will no longer suffer or die.

We have come so far.

In the 1950s, cure rate were less than 10%, and a diagnosis of childhood cancer was an almost certain death sentence. Today, the cure rate approaches 80%. But one child lost is one too many. We will not rest until every child diagnosed with cancer can be cured.

Secondly, today we urge you to Sign the Petition created by cancer parent, Bob Piniewski, and read his great site, People Against Childhood Cancer, to urge the media and our nation’s leaders to fully fund the research that will finally put an end to the #1 cause of death by disease in children in the United States.

Share this link with your friends and co-workers. Change won’t occur by itself. If you want to see a brighter future, we all need to work together, to make that future happen.

As we approach the holiday season, let us all resolve to give children with cancer the greatest gift there is – the gift of hope.

A Great Holiday Read That Helps Conquer Kids' Cancer

We wanted to let you know that all during December, noted author Jeannie Ralston will be donating a percentage of book sales from her new novel “The Unlikely Lavender Queen: A Memoir of Unexpected Blossoming” to CureSearch.

Ralston’s nephew Jacob was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma in August, 2007, and endured 25 proton beam treatments at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston and 14 rounds of chemotherapy at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, VA, both Children’s Oncology Group member institutions. Jacob is currently in remission.

Ralston says “I want to do what I can to make sure that no other children and no other families have to go through the trauma and stress all of us in our extended family felt during Jacob’s illness. I think that would be the best Christmas present children could receive.”

“The Unlikely Lavender Queen” follows Ralston as she reluctantly goes from being a journalist in Manhattan to a lavender farmer in rural Texas. She comes to embrace the change as the most rewarding adventure in her life, as she demonstrates to herself – and to her readers – how to “bloom where you’re planted.”

ABC’s “Good Morning America” has recommended “The Unlikely Lavender Queen” as one of its holiday “Great Reads,” as have Fortune’s “Small Business Magazine” and the Dallas Morning News, among others.

Pairings Announced for 20th Anniversary Merrill Lynch Shootout PGA TOUR Event

CureSearch Honorary Board of Trustee, and World Golf Hall of Famer, Greg Norman has announced the pairings for next month’s 20th anniversary Merrill Lynch Shootout. This year’s field may be the best ever, promising three days of thrills and excitement, all while raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer research.

Defending champions Woody Austin and Mark Calcavecchia will attempt to become only the third team in Shootout history to successfully defend their title. However, the twosome will face intense competition from 11 other world-class teams striving for a perfect partnership.

“Overall, I could not be more pleased with how the partnerships have fallen into place,” said tournament host Greg Norman. “The competition should be spirited - - Ryder Cup pairings from both the U.S. and European side, the partnership of my Presidents Cup counterpart Fred Couples and Stewart Cink along with several examples of long-time friends joining forces. This group is sure to entertain as we celebrate 20 years of the Merrill Lynch Shootout.”

MileStones Walk in Wilmington, Delaware

If you live in Delaware, South Jersey or in the metro Philadelphia area, there’s a great event taking place this weekend in Wilmington, DE that you might want to check out. The inaugural Greater Wilmington MileStones Walk is happening tomorrow, October 18th at Riverfront Wilmington. Already, more than 830 walkers have signed-up.

MileStones Walks are CureSearch signature events that support the lifesaving childhood cancer research conducted by the Children’s Oncology Group, who treat more than 90 percent of children with cancer in North America.

The Emcee for the Walk will be popular local morning radio show host, Michael Waite of WJBR 99.5 FM. Longtime CureSearch corporate supporter, Iron Hill Brewery, is generously providing an after-walk brunch for participants.

Registration opens in front of Iron Hill Brewery, 710 S. Madison Street, at 8:30 am. Opening ceremonies and the walk begin promptly at 9:30 am.

Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Survivors Battle to Survive and Thrive

The Wellness Community and CR Magazine have put together a great podcast series for cancer survivors called:

Surviving and Thriving: Life with Cancer

Episode Five: Young Cancer Survivors focuses on teenagers and young adult survivors, specifically Lauren and Simone, teenagers who met on GroupLoop.org both diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia or ALL. Both Lauren and Simone are interviewed on this podcast about their diagnosis, how it was helpful to interact with other teenagers with cancer through social networking and specifically GroupLoop, and how they connected with each other and later met even though they lived 2,000 miles apart.

Also interviewed on this podcast was Heidi Adams, founder of PlanetCancer.org, a website for young adult cancer survivors. Heidi talks on this podcast of her diagnosis of Ewing’s at age 26 and feeling alone, wanting to connect with other young cancer patients and survivors.

Virtual Walk for 12,500 Closes Today

It’s been an amazing ride creating awareness and raising funds for childhood cancer research through the CureSearch Virtual Walk for 12,500, but today it comes to a close. Today is the last day that CureSearch will be accepting donations to the Virtual Walk. To date, we have raised over $108,600! Thank you for your support of this great campaign.

Field Announced for Merrill Lynch Shootout PGA TOUR Event

We’re pleased to present to you the field for the 20th Anniversary Merrill Lynch Shootout PGA TOUR event, set for December 10 – 14 at the Tiburon Golf Club and The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples, FL, and hosted by World Golf Hall of Famer Greg Norman, a CureSearch NCCF Honorary Board of Trustee. CureSearch is the charity beneficiary of this exciting team-format event.

October 13th was Media Day, and the field announced is one of the strongest yet. It features five of top 25 ranked golfers in the world, including five members of the recently victorious United States Ryder Cup Team.

Besides The Shark, others who have committed to play include:

Fred Couples, Captain of 2009 United States Presidents Cup team; World Golf Hall of Famer, Nick Price; Camilo Villegas, reigning TOUR Championship winner; Defending Shootout champions, Woody Austin and Mark Calcavecchia; and U.S. Ryder Cup team members, Stewart Cink, J.B. Holmes, Kenny Perry, Steve Stricker and Boo Weekley.

Proceeds raised from the Merrill Lynch Shoot benefit the life-saving childhood cancer research of the Children’s Oncology Group, the world’s premier pediatric cancer research collaborative.

During last year’s Awards banquet, in front of a packed room of golfers and guests, Greg Norman said it best when he noted “it’s great for us to gather here, and exciting to have a great week of golf, but remember why we are here – to bring us closer to the day when childhood cancer is no more.”

COG Study Demonstrates Improved Care for Certain Childhood Brain Tumors

A study led by Joann L Ater, MD, professor of pediatrics at the Children’s Cancer Hospital at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston was presented recently at the 40th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology in Berlin, Germany. It was a multi-institutional study conducted by the Children’s Oncology Group. This is a great list of foundations, funds, awards, and others who offer scholarships to cancer survivors. Sometimes the requirements are narrow, but scroll through the list and see which ones apply to you or someone you know attending or about to attend college who is a childhood cancer survivor.
